Biography

Kevin McCarthy was an American actor whose career ranged across stage, film, and television. Born in Seattle, he attended the University of Minnesota, later helped found the Actors Studio. After appearing in the Army Air Forces production of Winged Victory and its film adaptation, he made his first credited screen appearance as Biff Loman in Death of a Salesman (1951), earning a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He became best known for the lead in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), then returned for a cameo in the 1978 remake. On television he starred in The Survivors (1969) and guest-starred on series such as The Twilight Zone. He toured for more than twenty years in a one-man show about Harry Truman. He worked repeatedly with director Joe Dante, playing Victor Scrimshaw in Innerspace (1987) and appearing in Matinee and Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003); he also played a station owner in UHF (1989).

Big break
McCarthy first played Biff Loman in the London theatrical debut of Death of a Salesman, and was the only member of that cast chosen for the 1951 film version.
Beyond film
McCarthy toured his one-man show Give 'em Hell Harry for more than 20 years, performing it in every state except Alaska and South Dakota.
Early training
McCarthy appeared in his first play, Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, while a student at the University of Minnesota, where he discovered his love of acting.
A change of course
While serving in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, McCarthy was in the AAF play Winged Victory and the 1944 film version of it.
