Bill McKinney
Biography
Bill McKinney was an American character actor who trained at the Pasadena Playhouse and Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio before making his movie debut in She Freak (1967). He first appeared on television in an episode of The Monkees and drew attention as Lobo in Alias Smith and Jones. Deliverance (1972) proved to be his breakthrough, with McKinney playing the sadistic mountain man. After working with Clint Eastwood on Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), he became part of Eastwood's stock company. Eastwood directed him in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), where he played Captain Terrill, and he later made six more films with Eastwood. He played Jay Cobb in The Shootist (1976), John Wayne's final film. Later he appeared in First Blood (1982). His television work included The Execution of Private Slovik (1974). He took up singing in the late 1990s and released an album, Love Songs from Antri. He voiced Jonah Hex in Batman: The Animated Series. He died in 2011.

Early training
After his discharge in 1954, Bill McKinney settled in California and in 1957 attended acting school at the Pasadena Playhouse, where Dustin Hoffman and Mako Iwamatsu were among his classmates.
A change of course
McKinney joined the Navy at 19 while the Korean War was being fought. He spent two years aboard a mine sweeper in Korean waters, then was stationed at Port Hueneme in Ventura County, California.

During this period, McKinney took work as an arborist to earn money, and he kept that job until the mid-1970s.
First role
After studying at the Pasadena Playhouse, McKinney went on to Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio. His first movie role came in the exploitation picture She Freak in 1967.
Big break
Deliverance, released in 1972, was the film that gave McKinney his breakthrough. He played a backwoods mountain man who violently rapes the character portrayed by Ned Beatty.
Beyond film
McKinney began singing in the late 1990s and later put out an album of country and western and standards songs called Love Songs from Antri.
