Plot summary
The daughter of a senator, seventeen-year-old Annabelle Tillman is enrolled at Saint Theresa's, a Catholic boarding school for girls, after two expulsions. Simone Bradley teaches poetry there and is in charge of the dormitory Annabelle shares with Catherine, who bullies the other students, and Colins, a nervous girl. Annabelle defies authority, and Mother Immaculata, the principal, rebukes her for wearing Buddhist prayer beads, ordering Simone to control her. Simone first asks to have Annabelle moved to a different dormitory, then notices her maturity and persuades her to follow the school's rules. Annabelle falls in love with Simone, who ignores her overtures.
