Plot summary
The St. Gregory is a five-star New Orleans hotel built eighty-five years ago by the family of Warren Trent, and it is in serious financial trouble. Peter McDermott, its general manager, has come up through the ranks and has ended the hotel's unofficial segregation policy while holding on to its old-fashioned character. He weighs proposals from Curtis O'Keefe, a chain hotelier staying in the building with his companion Jeanne Rochefort, from a union that would protect the staff and pay for repairs, and from a developer who would demolish the hotel for a skyscraper. Meanwhile the staff deal with a faulty elevator, a string of room robberies, the arrival of Dr. and Mrs. Elmo Adams, a black couple who booked rooms without mentioning it, and the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Lanbourne.
