Plot summary
A blackout hits the Unidyne building, a skyscraper in New York City, and accountant David Stillwell feels his way down the stairs with a penlight. A woman there greets him as someone she knows and mentions a major, a name that means nothing to him. At street level a crowd has gathered around the body of Charles Calvin, a peace activist who fell from his office window on the twenty-seventh floor. The building has no sub-basement where David thought he saw one, and a hostile man named Willard orders him away. At his apartment Lester, a man in the major's employ, threatens him. At a police station David cannot answer the simplest questions about himself, and a psychiatrist, Dr. Broden, dismisses his talk of amnesia. He hires the novice detective Ted Caselle to help him.
