Plot summary
Everything in Bannerman is controlled by the wealthy rancher Josiah Bannerman and his kin. Circuit judge Rick Thorne rides in and asks Nat Bell, the sheriff, and Buck Streeter, the district attorney, why Josiah's son Tom was never arrested or tried for killing a man. Neither man offers him help. Thorne stands up to Tom and jails him. He also meets Amy Lee, Josiah's niece, who is drawn to the judge.
