Phil Hartman
Biography
Phil Hartman was a comedian, actor, screenwriter, and graphic artist who was Canadian and American. Born in Brantford, Ontario, he moved to the United States at age ten and later studied graphic arts, working as a graphic artist before joining the Groundlings in 1975. There he collaborated with Paul Reubens on Pee-wee Herman, co-wrote Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and played Captain Carl on The Pee-wee Herman Show and Pee-wee's Playhouse. In 1986 he became a cast member on Saturday Night Live, remaining eight seasons and winning a Primetime Emmy Award for his writing in 1989. After leaving in 1994, he starred as Bill McNeal on NewsRadio and provided the voices of Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure for The Simpsons. He appeared in films such as Sgt. Bilko (1996) and Jingle All the Way (1996), along with Houseguest (1995) and Small Soldiers (1998), and received a posthumous Emmy nomination for NewsRadio.

Big break
Hartman and Reubens created the Pee-wee Herman character together and developed The Pee-wee Herman Show, which aired on HBO in 1981. Hartman co-wrote the 1985 film Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and its success changed his mind about quitting acting at 36.
Big break
Hartman was recommended for Saturday Night Live by Jon Lovitz and Laraine Newman, both Groundlings and SNL cast members, and by Penny Marshall, who directed him in Jumpin' Jack Flash. After that, he tried out and won a place on the NBC show.
First role
Hartman's first onscreen appearance was in the 1978 Australian film Stunt Rock, directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith. He had begun attending evening comedy classes by The Groundlings in 1975.
