Plot summary
At their party's national convention, Senator Joe Cantwell and former Secretary of State William Russell are the two leading candidates for the presidential nomination. Neither holds enough delegates to win. Russell, a principled intellectual, has alienated his wife, Alice, and carries a past breakdown. Cantwell campaigns as a populist and an anti-communist who promises to close the missile gap. Each man considers the other unfit for the presidency. Both want the backing of Art Hockstader, the former president, who is dying; he favors Russell while questioning his indecision, and holds Cantwell's recklessness against him.
