Plot summary
Stockholm fills with this year's Nobel laureates, and the literature prize goes to Andrew Craig, an American novelist whose six books sold poorly and who has not written in five years, earning a living instead with pulp detective stories under a pseudonym. The Swedish foreign office assigns Inger Lisa Andersson to keep him from embarrassing the prize. The physics laureate, Dr. Max Stratman, arrives with his niece Emily. Stratman is friendly at their first meeting. At their second he does not recognize Craig at all. Craig, distrusted by his hosts because of his drinking, sets out to learn why the physicist he met has changed.
