Plot summary
In a near-future United States, immigration has surged and politicians openly court ethnic blocs for their votes, while cable news audiences hit record highs. After India uses an atomic weapon on Pakistan, an international body plans to send refugee orphans to Idaho, a state that has already absorbed more than a million refugees. Governor Jim Farley says he is a nativist and orders the Idaho National Guard to seal the border for public safety, though he is having an affair with Christina Fernandez, a Mexican American reporter for the network NewsNet. NewsNet puts a correspondent on the flight and broadcasts the weeping children for ratings. The President, who delegates decisions to his advisor Jack Buchan, tells Farley to reopen the border within 72 hours.
