Plot summary
The territory's five richest men meet in Laredo once a year for a high-stakes poker game, and nothing is allowed to stand in its way. Undertaker Tropp drives his hearse through town to collect them; Henry Drummond, a cattleman, puts off his daughter's wedding, and the lawyer Otto Habershaw walks out during his closing argument. They sit down in the saloon's back room with Wilcox and Buford, while onlookers wait outside for word of the play. Settler Meredith, traveling with his wife Mary and their son Jackie toward a farm near San Antonio, is stuck in town while a broken wagon wheel is repaired. A former gambler, he asks to watch, then stakes the family's savings on a place at the table.
