Karen White is a television news anchor in Los Angeles, and the serial killer Eddie Quist has been stalking her. Working with the police, she agrees to a scheme to catch him by meeting him at a theater in a red light district. Eddie forces her to watch a video, and when she turns to look at him she screams. Two officers find them and shoot Eddie. Karen is left emotionally disturbed and with no memory of the encounter. After a consultation, her therapist, Doc George Waggner, advises her to get away to the Colony, a retreat in the countryside where he keeps a group of patients, and she travels there with her husband, Bill Neill, for treatment.
