Plot summary
Beneath the Nevada desert, a wormhole called the Ark leads to an old city on Mars, found in 2026. Twenty years on, something attacks the staff of the Union Aerospace Corporation's Martian research facility, and Dr. Carmack's distress call sends a squad of marines through the portal. Sarge leads Duke, Goat, Destroyer, Portman, Mac, Kid and John "Reaper" Grimm, with orders from the corporation to retrieve its computer data. On Mars a worker called Pinky greets them, and Reaper finds his twin sister, Dr. Sam Grimm, among the scientists. The dig site where their parents died has been reopened, and the humanoid skeletons found there had been altered with a 24th chromosome pair.

- The first person shooter sequence was directed by Farhat and filmed in 14 days after a planning period of three months. While the scene is one continuous shot, multiple cuts that Farhat called "hook-ups" were made during filming.
- Vin Diesel was offered the lead but turned it down, and Dwayne Johnson turned down the role of John Grimm in favor of Sarge, saying he was "drawn more to Sarge" and thought the character was "more interesting and had a darker side."
- Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg were approached to polish the script's dialogue, but both declined, and Wesley Strick was hired instead to do the rewrite.
- Former id Software chief executive Todd Hollenshead said a number of factors prevented the project from moving forward, among them the Columbine High School massacre, a lack of producers and poor scripts.
- The prosthetics applied to Dwayne Johnson were built up in layers: the second took two hours to apply and the third took three hours, and acrylic paint was used to cover Johnson's tattoos.
