Plot summary
Off the Labrador Coast in 1962, the Italian ocean liner Antonia Graza carries a ballroom full of dancing passengers, and a girl named Katie Harwood sits by herself. Forty years on, the weather pilot Jack Ferriman tells the crew of the salvage tug Arctic Warrior about a vessel adrift. Anyone who tows it to port can claim it, so Captain Sean Murphy, Maureen Epps, Greer, Dodge, Munder and Santos set out and identify the ship as the Antonia Graza. The liner is deserted, and they find nine wooden boxes, each filled with gold bars. Strange events begin as they ready the vessel for towing.

- Most of the film was shot on sets built on a sound stage at Village Roadshow Studios, and the only ship used was the tugboat Arctic Warrior; while filming exterior shots on it, a feeding frenzy brought 800 to 1,000 sharks within 50 yards of the production and its stars.
- Duguid called the ballroom transformation "the most difficult shot I've ever worked on". It used two sets, the decrepit ballroom adrift for forty years and the luxurious one, and 80 layers of the scene were shot on a circular motion control track, some forwards, some backwards, some fast, some slow.
- According to Beck in the director's commentary, the September 11 attacks in the United States inspired the studio to make the film a more definitive fight between good and evil instead of trying to be nuanced about the corruption of man.
- It has been suggested that the cast signed on based on an earlier draft of the script "and were sadly disappointed to find the script had been radically changed by Joel Silver and associates when they arrived to begin shooting."
- The SS Andrea Doria served as the inspiration for the film's ship, the Antonia Graza, and Photon created a 35-foot 1/20th scale model of her, allowing the exterior shots to be a combination of CGI, miniature and live-action footage.
- Bloody Disgusting listed the film's opening massacre at number 13 in its list of "The Top 13 Kills in Horror Movie History," while ComingSoon named the scene one of the greatest opening sequences in horror film history.
