Plot summary
A Viking Age expedition sails to North America to subjugate or wipe out the native Skrælings. Another native tribe destroys the party, and the only survivor is the Viking leader's son. A native woman adopts the boy, and the tribe raises him, naming him Ghost for his paleness. Fifteen years on, Ghost lives among them but has not earned the standing of a warrior. He loves Starfire, whose father is an old chief of a neighboring tribe and holds the title of Pathfinder. Ghost keeps one reminder of his Viking blood, his father's sword. When a new band of Viking raiders, led by Gunnar, attacks the village, Ghost takes up that sword against them.

- For the theatrical release, director Marcus Nispel was forced to cut the gore and digitally remove extreme violence from at least 32 scenes, plus a love scene between Ghost and Starfire, to get an R rating from the MPAA; he also trimmed 23 scenes, around ten minutes in all, restored in the unrated version released on July 31, 2007.
- Director Marcus Nispel, himself a graphic novelist, turned his own screenplay into a comic-book format to appeal to his target audience and help build a fan base so the film could get made, but his film was greenlit before the graphic novel was finished.
