Plot summary

Frank Valera wins acquittals for clients as a Pittsburgh defense lawyer, and he misses his daughter Olivia's talent show. That night his wife Sue and Olivia are found dead near the train yard. Detective Bill Lustiger tells him a gold fiber was found at the scene and suspects the Russian mafia, but the case has no leads. Frank drinks, then brawls in a cage behind a bar and loses every time. He meets officer Hank Strode there. Frank finds a copy of Marcus Aurelius's Meditations and takes a Stoic vow of silence while he trains in karate and jiu-jitsu. He returns to the train yard to look for clues and is shot in a fight with Russian thugs.
