Plot summary
Mega-City One is a violent metropolis of 800 million people on the east coast of the former United States, surrounded by irradiated wasteland. The Judges are its only authority, empowered to police the streets, pass sentence and carry it out immediately. The Chief Judge assigns veteran Judge Dredd to assess Cassandra Anderson, a recruit who failed the aptitude tests but whose mutation gives her psychic abilities. Slo-Mo, a drug that stretches a user's sense of time, is spreading through the city. A homicide call sends Dredd and Anderson into Peach Trees, a 200-story tower block where the drug lord Ma-Ma holds power. They raid a drug den inside the building and arrest her henchman Kay. Ma-Ma seals the tower.

- The Los Angeles Times reported in October 2011 that Travis had been barred from the editing process after creative disagreements between producers and executives; Garland took over, and his contribution was judged significant enough for him to seek a co-director credit despite never having directed a film.
- An unofficially altered Justin Bieber song inspired the Slo-Mo theme: Garland said Portishead's Geoff Barrow sent him a link to a Bieber song slowed down 800 times that became stunning trippy choral music, and Morgan recreated the effect for the finished film.
- Duncan Jones had been offered the director's job first; in a 2010 interview he described his vision for the film as weird, dark and funny, and said it did not mesh well with Garland's script.
- Dredd's motorcycle, the Lawmaster, was a modified 500cc bike given a large fairing with machine guns, an extended wheel base and the largest functional tyres possible, and Urban insisted on riding the working vehicle himself rather than relying on green-screen visual effects.
- Before Headey was cast, the character she plays had been envisioned very differently: as a heavily made-up, scarred and obese older woman.
