Plot summary
David Gray lives in his parents' holiday house at Aramoana, a settlement on the Otago coast. One day in November 1990 he rides his bicycle into town and argues with bank staff over something small. Angry and unstable, he returns home, where he keeps firearms. Children from the neighboring property wander onto his yard, and he shouts at them. Their father, Garry Holden, takes up the argument. Gray goes inside and comes back out with a rifle. Holden's two young daughters and Rewa, the adopted daughter of his girlfriend Julie-Anne Bryson, run into the family's house. Chiquita, wounded, gets away and reaches Julie-Anne, who drives toward the scene to collect the others. Neighbors hear gunfire and see smoke, among them Eva Dickson, an elderly widow recovering from hip surgery.

Mike Kyne, an Armed Offenders Squad officer who shot David Gray, objected to the film showing his squad standing aside smoking cigarettes while the handcuffed gunman lay dying. None of them had smoked; they had called an ambulance, and Gray died in it rather than at the crib as in the film.- Opposition from the town of Aramoana meant no filming was done there; residents got to see the film before the public, and it would not be called Aramoana. Most of it was shot in Long Beach, a settlement six kilometers away.
