Plot summary
Zack, a paleontologist, brings Ricky and Jade, his nephew and niece, to hunt fossils in Alaska while their parents vacation in Europe. Away from the others, Ricky meets a raven named Alex, who changes into a prehistoric ancestor, Alexornis, and tells him about his friend Patchi, a Pachyrhinosaurus from 70 million years ago. Patchi, the smallest and youngest hatchling in his litter, is bullied by his brother Scowler. Their father Bulldust leads the herd. Alex, Patchi's mentor and protector, tries to help him win over a female named Juniper. A Troodon attacks Patchi, and Bulldust drives it off, leaving Patchi with a hole in his frill.

- Walking with Dinosaurs was originally planned without any narration or dialogue, but 20th Century Fox executives decided to add voiceovers after deciding they would connect audiences to the characters.
- At the live-action filming locations, the crew built dinosaur shapes out of PVC drain pipes so the filmmakers could get a sense of the dinosaurs' scale.
- Animal Logic adapted Quill, the software it had used to animate penguin feathers on Happy Feet (2006), into a new program called RepTile to animate dinosaur skin and scales, and added feathers to dinosaurs including the Troodon and Hesperonychus.
- John Leguizamo, who voiced Alex, said he hid his own accent and adopted a Spanish accent for the part because parrots have a Latin American origin.
- For the river chase scene, the crew filmed at rapids in New Zealand, shooting from a helicopter and with a 3D camera rig mounted in a rubber boat.
- In the United States, Walking with Dinosaurs is one of only twelve feature films to be released in over 3,000 theaters and still improve on its second-weekend box office, rising 2.6% to $7,276,172.
- The filmmakers decided against feathers for the Gorgosaurus and gave the villain iridescent scales instead, to the disappointment of many paleontologists. Shortly after that design was settled, the tyrannosauroid Yutyrannus was discovered with direct evidence of feathers.
- Director Barry Cook said the original plan was a film with no dialogue or narration at all: one that could stand alone as a virtual silent movie, where you could turn the soundtrack off and still get involved with the story and feel the emotions of the characters.
