Plot summary
On Cayman Brac in the nineteenth century, Ercell Bodden lives a quiet life with Isaac, her disabled son, and Elizabeth, her sister-in-law. Neither of them knows that she was once a pirate, and she is waiting for her husband, the sea captain T.H., whose ship is now fifty-nine days overdue. Captain Connor, an old enemy who holds a deep grudge against Ercell, arrives at the island with a band of buccaneers to take the bounty on her head. His men storm the settlement, and Ercell takes Isaac and Elizabeth into the jungle. Connor tells her that her husband is his prisoner.
