Plot summary
Surtur, a fire demon, holds Thor captive in chains and tells him that Odin is no longer on Asgard and that the realm will be destroyed in Ragnarök once Surtur's crown is united with the Eternal Flame in Odin's vault. Thor breaks free, takes the crown, and comes home, where the Bifröst is now guarded by Skurge and Heimdall is nowhere to be found. Loki is sitting in Odin's place. He admits he cast a spell on their father and left him on Earth. The sorcerer Stephen Strange agrees to help the brothers look for Odin if all Asgardians leave Earth, and they travel to Norway.

- The line in the trailer where Thor calls Hulk "a friend from work" was suggested to Chris Hemsworth by a Make-A-Wish child who was visiting the set on the day the scene was filmed.
- Taika Waititi made a sizzle reel for the tone, using clips from other films, and its use of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song", a practice Marvel discourages, was considered "amazing"; Kevin Feige said the song "defined what Taika was going to do with this", and it was later used in the film and its marketing.
- For the Loki actor in the Asgardian play scene, Chris Hemsworth suggested his friend Matt Damon, who was in New York City at the time and flew to Atlanta just to shoot the cameo "on a lark".
- Tessa Thompson said her character Valkyrie is bisexual, based on the character's comic book relationship with Annabelle Riggs, and convinced Taika Waititi to shoot a glimpse of a woman walking out of Valkyrie's bedroom; it was cut for distracting from the scene's exposition.

Making Hela Thor's sister, rather than only Loki as in the comics and Norse mythology, was an idea screenwriter Eric Pearson put into a draft at executive producer Brad Winderbaum's encouragement, to give Hela and Thor's final confrontation more impact.- According to Taika Waititi, 80 percent of the dialogue in the film was improvised, aiming for a "very loose and collaborate mood" among the cast and to replicate the tone and sensibility of his previous films.
- During some of Thor's interactions with the Hulk, stunt actor Paul Lowe, who is under 5 ft tall, stood in for Chris Hemsworth so that the Hulk's stuntmen would be proportionally correct.
- Rising Sun Pictures made the Valkyrie flashback's surreal, ethereal look with motion capture, computer graphics, a 900 fps high-speed frame rate, and a 360-degree rig of 200 strobe lights that bathed the scene in undulating light and shadow.
