Plot summary
Pete Healy is five when the car carrying him and his parents overturns in the Pacific Northwest after a near miss with a deer. Left alone, he runs into the trees, where a wolf pack closes in until a dragon appears, large and green-furred, with yellow eyes and wings. Pete calls him Elliot, a name taken from a book he loves, and lives with him in the woods. Six years pass, and a logging crew starts felling trees near their home. Natalie Magary, whose father Jack is the crew's foreman, spots the boy and follows him. Jack's girlfriend Grace Meacham, a park ranger, has heard stories of a dragon from her father Conrad for years and never believed them.

- The 2016 remake's casting shifted more than once: Wes Bentley joined to replace Casey Affleck, Michael C. Hall was added to the cast days later, and Karl Urban then replaced Hall.
- Academy Award-winning composer Howard Shore was originally hired to write the music for the remake, but he was replaced during post-production by Daniel Hart, who had worked with director David Lowery on other films, most notably Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013).
