Plot summary
In March 1942, Johann Schmidt, who leads the Nazi-backed science division HYDRA, takes a relic called the Tesseract from a town in German-occupied Norway. In New York City, the Army rejects Steve Rogers again because of his small stature and poor health. At the Stark Expo, Dr. Abraham Erskine overhears Rogers telling his best friend Bucky Barnes that he wants to serve his country, and allows him to enlist. Rogers joins the Strategic Scientific Reserve, where Erskine, Howard Stark, Colonel Chester Phillips and the British agent Peggy Carter work on a super-soldier experiment. Phillips doubts Erskine's claims about Rogers until Rogers throws himself onto a grenade during a test. Erskine had been a scientist under Schmidt before Schmidt took a prototype of the formula.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Chris Evans turned down the role of Captain America three times before agreeing to a six-picture Marvel deal, later admitting he was scared and had realized he was "almost too chicken" to play the part.
- Before Chris Evans was cast, a long list of other actors were considered for Captain America, including John Krasinski, Channing Tatum, Ryan Phillippe, Zachary Levi, Jensen Ackles, and Chris Pratt.
- To make Chris Evans look like the frail pre-serum Steve Rogers, effects company LOLA digitally shrank him in every dimension, filming each scene up to four times, including once with Evans alone against green screen.
- Hugo Weaving's Red Skull makeup used a bulky latex mask designed by David White, and the visual effects team then digitally thinned his cheeks and lower lip and hollowed out his eyes to make the prosthetic read as tight, bony skin.
- Director Joe Johnston tested shooting a scene natively in 3-D rather than converting it afterward, and called the one-day experiment "a nightmare" because of bulky gear, calibration issues, and limits it put on filmmaking.
