Plot summary
Edward Rodney Fleming lives alone after losing his job and his wife. One morning Detective Sergeant John Steele and Detective Wayne Prior force their way into his apartment, rough him up, scatter his belongings, and take him to the station in handcuffs. The detectives question him about a stolen car and its owner, Andrew Beecroft. They say Fleming's handwriting matches forged sales papers, and that the fake buyer used an alias Fleming once used to take a car for a joyride. Fleming denies the theft, asks for food, and asks for a lawyer.
