Plot summary
Two young Americans, Hanna and Liv, have run out of money while backpacking through Australia, and an employment agency sends them to tend bar at the Royal Hotel. Billy, who owns the place, and his wife Carol, the cook, put them to work at the farewell party for the English barmaids they are replacing, Jules and Cassie. The customers are mostly men, and Hanna is disturbed by their sexist jokes and behavior while Liv dismisses it as a difference in culture. Among the regulars is Matty, who flirts with them, and the local Dolly drives Jules and Cassie back to town. The next day, after a swim with Matty, Hanna and Liv see how unstable Billy and Carol's marriage is, and learn that Billy has not paid Tommy, the deliveryman, for months.

- Kitty Green's script, co-written with Oscar Redding, was inspired by Pete Gleeson's 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie, which chronicles two young Finnish female backpackers facing misogyny while working as barmaids in the Western Australian mining town of Coolgardie.
- The Royal Hotel's pub was a disused bar in Yatina, a South Australian town with a population of 29; the building's upstairs living area was used for filming, but the ground-floor bar scenes were shot on a separate stage.
