Plot summary
More than a thousand years after the Sixty Minute War, the remnants of humanity live in Traction Cities that hunt and absorb smaller settlements, while the Anti-Traction League holds static cities in Asia behind the Shield Wall. London captures Salzhaken, a Bavarian mining town, taking its people and resources aboard. Tom Natsworthy, an apprentice historian, collects Old-Tech for London's museum. Among the captured Salzhakens is Hester Shaw, a masked young woman who attacks Thaddeus Valentine, the head of London's Guild of Historians, accusing him of murdering her mother and scarring her face. Tom stops her, then follows her to a waste chute, and Valentine pushes him down it. Cast out of London, Hester and Tom are dropped in the wastelands, where she robs him and strikes out alone.
