Plot summary
Martin is a blind photographer. As a boy he decides his mother is lying when she describes a man raking leaves in the garden, a sound he cannot hear, and that memory leaves him expecting sighted people to mislead or pity him. He takes photographs of the world and has other people describe them, stamping the Braille descriptions onto the prints as proof of what is really there. Celia, his housekeeper, keeps photographs of Martin on the walls of her flat and torments him while he rebuffs her romantic advances; he keeps her around because her love and hatred mean she cannot pity him. Martin meets Andy, whose detailed descriptions of his photographs he admires, and the two become close friends, which leaves Celia feeling threatened.
