Plot summary
Lawrence Talbot's childhood in Blackmoor ended the night his mother, Solana, died, and his father sent him to Lambeth Hospital in London before he went to America. His brother Ben's mutilated body is found in a slaughterhouse, so Ben's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe, seeks Lawrence out and he returns to the family estate. There he meets Sir John, his father, from whom he has long been apart. Some locals believe a wild animal did the killing, while many others blame the Romani camped outside the hamlet. Constable Nye leads a raid on that camp under a full moon, and a beast tears through the crowd, killing Nye and biting Lawrence. Maleva, a Romani woman, stitches his wounds; another of her people says he should be killed. Inspector Francis Aberline then arrives from Scotland Yard to investigate.

- Mark Romanek was originally attached to direct but left weeks before filming over creative differences and budgetary issues; Johnston was hired four weeks before principal photography, under the impression he could shoot the film in 80 days, as Universal intended.
- Danny Elfman's dark, moody score was rejected by the studio as a poor fit after being edited by over half an hour, and Paul Haslinger replaced him with a contemporary electronic score. The studio found that inappropriate for the late 19th-century Gothic setting, so Elfman's original recording is the one heard in the finished film.
- The Wolfman's howl was built out of elements taken from the voices of rock singers Gene Simmons and David Lee Roth, mixed with opera singers and animal impersonators.
- Universal donated 5,000 pounds to Lacock in Wiltshire, a village conserved by the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, in return for filming in the tithe barn for a scene involving frozen corpses.
- Cast and crew went back to the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College and park in Greenwich over the weekends of 22-25 and 30-31 May 2009. The purpose of the reshoots was to change the way one werewolf looked: it had stood on two legs, and now it stands on four.
