Plot summary
Roland Copping is an insurance investigator who plays outrageous games and gimmicks on the people around him, and who rolls a pair of dice to settle questions. In the town of Andreas, Jonathan and Beth Wheats host a party with their friends Margaret and Michael. The next night Beth comes home to a ransacked house, finds a burglar taking a set of silver Georgian cutlery, and fires a crossbow at him as he comes at her with a knife. She is tried and acquitted. Six months later the Wheats file a claim for the cutlery, and Roland visits to interview Jonathan about the death, then returns a month later to interview Beth.
