Peter Cullen
Biography
Peter Cullen was a Canadian-American voice actor who, after graduating from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1963, moved from stage and television work into a long career in voiceover. He first voiced Optimus Prime in the 1980s Transformers animated series, also playing Ironhide, and returned to the role in the 2007 live-action Transformers film and its sequels Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Dark of the Moon (2011), Age of Extinction (2014) and The Last Knight (2017), plus Bumblebee (2018) and Rise of the Beasts (2023). Other characters included Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider and the title character's vocalizations in Predator (1987). He earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Transformers: Prime and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2023.

Cullen was the first person to voice Nintendo's Mario in western media, playing him in the Donkey Kong segments of the 1983-1984 TV series Saturday Supercade.
Early training
Cullen belonged to the National Theatre School of Canada's first graduating class, and he finished his studies there in 1963.
A change of course
After a year with the Crest Theatre Foundation repertory company, Cullen quit the stage because he found the dramatic work too serious and spent a year working at a gas station.

Cullen was one of the first four human inductees into Hasbro's Transformers Hall of Fame at BotCon 2010, honored for his voice work as Optimus Prime.
