Plot summary
Martin Feeney, a Connaught Ranger who has served the British Army in Afghanistan and India, comes back to Connemara in 1847, the worst year of the Great Famine. His mother has starved, and his brother was hanged for stabbing a bailiff during the family's eviction. Feeney stays with Ellie, his brother's widow, who occupies one of the last standing cottages with her three children, and plans to take them to America. Before they can leave, the local Anglo-Irish landlord's agents and Royal Irish Constabulary men come to clear the cottage. Hannah, a British Army veteran working as an investigator for the Constabulary, strangles a Young Ireland prisoner while drunk and is sentenced to hang.

- Director Lance Daly said no film about the Great Hunger had been made for the big screen before Black '47, and that the cast and crew felt a huge responsibility because of the subject's importance in Irish history.
- Black '47 became the highest-grossing Irish film in Ireland, and its opening weekend there was the biggest for any film since Brooklyn in 2015.
- Barry Keoghan, who plays Private Hobson, limited his eating of solid foods and survived on glucose drinks to lose weight for the role.
- Australian actor James Frecheville had to learn Irish for his part, and said picking up a language not many people speak was pretty tough.
- The film shows Feeney serving with the Connaught Rangers in Afghanistan and deserting from India, but the real 88th Regiment of Foot was garrisoned in the West Indies in 1847 and had not served in India since 1800.
