Plot summary
Johnny Cobb is a peace-loving farmer in the small town of Firecreek, where he also serves as a part-time sheriff, and wears a badge that is practically honorary. He has spent years avoiding criminals and gunfights. His wife Henrietta is about to give birth. Bob Larkin and his men, among them Earl, Norman and Drew, ride into Firecreek and cause trouble, and Cobb asks Larkin to rein them in. Larkin refuses and would rather spend his time with Evelyn, an attractive widow. Arthur, a slow-witted stable boy, is the only one in town ready to help Cobb.
