Plot summary

John Conroy, a special prosecutor given wide powers to dismantle the syndicate run by Neil Eichelberger in a midwestern city, appoints his father Matt, a police officer, as chief investigator. Matt is unwilling to take the post, and John cannot understand his hesitation. Jerry McKibbon, a journalist who doubts that John is prepared for the job, has seen Matt in the company of the mob lieutenant Harrigan, and he must decide whether to tell John. That decision weighs on their friendship, and Jerry's attraction to Amanda Waycross, John's girl, adds to his difficulty. As the investigation threatens them, the racketeers turn to violence.
