Plot summary
Vernon Simpson is a college professor at work on a long-term experiment. When a baseball sails through his window, his glassware is smashed and the contents of his flasks and test tubes run together. The combined fluids form a chemical named methylethylpropylbutyl, which soaks into a large part of the ball. Simpson finds that the substance pushes wood away, and that anything the substance touches does the same. Seeing what the discovery offers a pitcher, he arranges a leave of absence and sets out for St. Louis to try his luck in the big leagues, where he pitches under the name King Kelly.
