Biography

Dean Jagger was an American actor who worked in movies, theater, and television and was known as a dependable character actor from Hollywood's Golden Age, though he also played leading roles. Born in Columbus Grove, Ohio, he studied acting in Chicago before making his Broadway debut in 1925. His breakthrough came on stage in Tobacco Road in 1933, and he later portrayed Brigham Young in Brigham Young (1940). His work in Twelve O'Clock High (1949) earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He appeared in The Robe (1953) and White Christmas (1954), then in Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), King Creole (1958), The Nun's Story (1959), and Elmer Gantry (1960). On television, his role on Mr. Novak brought him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. He continued acting into the 1980s, with later roles in Vanishing Point (1971) and Alligator (1980), and died in 1991.

Early training
Jagger trained at the Conservatory of Drama under Elias Day. Day helped him land a job on the Chautauqua circuit.
First role
Jagger replaced Spencer Tracy in a stock company. He also worked in vaudeville and on radio, and in 1925 he made his Broadway debut in a small role in a George M. Cohan production.
