Plot summary
Devereaux Burke, a cattle baron, is asked by former president Andrew Jackson to help bring Texas into the United States rather than let it become a republic. Support for annexation is weakening because people wrongly believe that Texas pioneer Sam Houston opposes statehood, and wealthy rancher Thomas Craden heads the opposition. Craden is ambushed by Comanche Indians and Burke comes to his aid. The two men travel to Austin, where Martha Ronda runs the local newspaper. Craden has no idea that Burke wants annexation, so he invites him to a dinner for several senators at his own house. When the senators refuse to vote against annexation, Craden will not let them leave.
