Plot summary
Wounded late in World War II, Bob Corey is an army hospital patient facing spinal operations, and he has fallen for Julie Benson, the nurse caring for him. His army friend Steve Connolly visits to discuss the ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona, they intend to buy with their pooled GI benefits. While he lies semiconscious on Christmas Eve, a woman with a Swedish accent tells him that Steve has been badly hurt and wants to die, but she would not help him end his life. Bob tells her to do nothing that would harm Steve and to wait, then slips into unconsciousness. After his discharge, police captain Garcia questions Bob, saying Steve is sought in the killing of the racketeer Solly Blayne. Bob answers that Steve would have no part in anything criminal.
