Plot summary
Fred Staples, an industrial engineer from Ohio, is recruited by Walter Ramsey to a senior position at Ramsey and Company's headquarters in New York City, the corporation Ramsey inherited from his father. Fred arrives with his wife, Nancy, unaware that Ramsey intends him for the post held by Bill Briggs, the sixty-two-year-old vice-president who has spent forty years with the firm and worked for Ramsey's father, and who has just returned after another bout of chronic illness. Ramsey, known for running the company ruthlessly, will not fire Briggs; he works instead to humiliate him into resigning.
