Edward Binns

Biography

Edward Binns was an American actor who often played competent, hard working men across a long career in film, television and the stage. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1937 and began acting in a Cleveland repertory theater, then spent a year with the Pan-American Theatre in Mexico City. An early member of the Actors Studio, he studied with Elia Kazan from 1947 and appeared on Broadway in Command Decision, Caligula and Ghosts. His film work began in the early 1950s; he played Juror No. 6 in 12 Angry Men (1957), a police detective in North by Northwest (1959), Colonel Grady in Fail-Safe (1964) and Lieutenant General Walter Bedell Smith in Patton (1970), with later roles in Night Moves (1975) and The Verdict (1982). On television he starred as Lieutenant Roy Brenner in Brenner from 1959 to 1962 and was a cast member of The Nurses from 1962 to 1964. He died in 1990.

Early training
Binns was among the earliest members of the Actors Studio, which had just been formed, and in late 1947 he started studying with Elia Kazan.
First role
Binns began his theatrical career in Cleveland, where he participated in a repertory theater shortly after graduating from college in 1937.
A change of course
Binns joined the Army Air Forces in 1942. After he graduated from Officer Candidate School, his role was armament officer in the China-Burma-India Theater.
