Dianne Wiest
Biography
Dianne Wiest is an American actress whose stage training and early theater roles led to a film career built on supporting parts. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, she left her theater studies to tour with a Shakespearean troupe, made her Broadway debut in Solitaire/Double Solitaire in 1971, and won an Obie Award for The Art of Dining. Woody Allen directed her in The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), and Bullets Over Broadway (1994); the latter two earned her Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress. Ron Howard's Parenthood (1989) brought her second Oscar nomination. Her film work also includes Footloose (1984), The Lost Boys (1987), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Birdcage (1996), and Synecdoche, New York (2008). On television she won Emmys for Road to Avonlea and In Treatment and played a district attorney on Law & Order from 2000 to 2002.

Wiest's performance as the shy author Elizabeth Barrow Colt in Tina Howe's The Art of Dining won three off-Broadway awards: an Obie, a Theatre World Award and the Clarence Derwent Award.
Early training
Wiest taught at Columbia University's Graduate Acting Program as a visiting teacher during September 2010. She worked there with 18 first-year MFA acting students on plays by Anton Chekhov and Arthur Miller.
