Plot summary
Cindy Green works at the museum in Stanleyville, and her husband Jim works at the town's pencil factory. Doctors tell the couple that they cannot conceive. Jim asks Cindy to picture the child they will never have, and together they write down the qualities they imagine, then place the slips of paper in a wooden box and put it in the ground in their backyard. A thunderstorm sweeps over their property alone. A ten-year-old boy appears in their kitchen, covered in mud, calling them mom and dad. He says his name is Timothy. His legs have leaves on them, which he keeps hidden under long green socks, and the box has been smashed.
