Plot summary
Kate Gunzinger teaches mathematics at a Chicago university and has recently moved in with Homer, a builder. Their arrangement gives each of them freedom, and neither is deeply involved in the other's life. Kate goes to New York to interview for an administrative post that would leave her little time for research. Her widowed father Jacob is also in New York, marrying a woman named Emma, whom Kate does not much like, and Kate decides at the last minute to attend the ceremony. There she meets Emma's son Ben Lewin, a former baseball player whose career ended with injuries. Ben has a wife and daughter in Akron.

After Ray Stark's death, Claudia Weill said the producer "was a real bully" who would undermine her authority in front of the crew, and that while the movie was being edited he had hired a shadow editor to cut a different version. She directed no more films outside television.
