Plot summary
Laurel Ayres is a smart investment banker climbing the corporate ladder on Wall Street, where she does the work while senior investors like Frank Peterson take the credit. A promotion goes instead to Frank, her less intelligent male protege, and she quits rather than answer to him. Starting her own firm, she finds the male-dominated brokerage world will not take an African American woman seriously. So she creates a partner no one can meet: a white man named Robert S. Cutty, whose name she takes from a bottle of Cutty Sark. She studies the speech and manners of the men she is imitating so her work can speak for itself through him.
