Biography

Charles Grodin was an American actor, comedian and author who brought a deadpan style to Hollywood comedies, frequently playing the put-upon straight man. Born in Pittsburgh, he trained at HB Studio under Uta Hagen and made his screen debut in an uncredited bit part in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). A small role in Rosemary's Baby (1968) came before the lead in The Heartbreak Kid (1972), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a musical or comedy. He starred in and helped write 11 Harrowhouse (1974). His other films included Catch-22 (1970), King Kong (1976), Heaven Can Wait (1978), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), Midnight Run (1988), Taking Care of Business (1990) and Beethoven (1992). He won a Primetime Emmy for writing the Paul Simon Special, hosted his own talk show on CNBC, and wrote books and plays. He died in 2021.
