Plot summary
The Owens family lives under a curse laid by their ancestor Maria Owens: any man who loves an Owens woman dies. Sally and her sister Gillian believe the curse is over, but Gary, whom Sally has just married, dies. In her grief Sally turns her back on magic and leaves Kylie and Antonia, her daughters, with no memory of it. Years later the aunt Jet, reading a raven as an omen, finds the Book of Raven, which holds the way to break Maria's curse, though key pages are sealed. Jet leaves the book and a note for her sister Frances, and the family gathers at the house for Jet's birthday.
