Plot summary
Dan Burns is an advice columnist, a widower and the father of three daughters, and he keeps a close eye on them. Every year he takes the girls to his parents' home on the Rhode Island coast, where his brothers, his sister and their children gather. On the first morning he chats with Marie in a bookshop and she mentions a new boyfriend. Back at his parents' house, his younger brother Mitch arrives with the woman he is seeing, and she is Marie. The family welcomes her, and Dan, aware of how Mitch feels, says nothing about their chat. He and Marie keep the meeting between themselves; his father's urging that he look for love again after his wife's death does not move him.
