Stockard Channing
Biography
Stockard Channing is an American actress whose honors include a Tony Award and three Emmy Awards. She was born in Manhattan and trained at HB Studio in New York City before beginning with the experimental Theatre Company of Boston. Her Broadway debut came in the musical Two Gentlemen of Verona, and she won a Tony Award in 1985 for a Broadway revival. On film she is known for playing Betty Rizzo in Grease (1978), and she earned an Academy Award nomination for Six Degrees of Separation (1993). She also appeared in Heartburn (1986) and Practical Magic (1998). She won Emmy Awards in 2002 for The West Wing, where she played First Lady Abbey Bartlet, and for The Matthew Shepard Story, and a Daytime Emmy in 2005 for Jack. Her later work includes The Good Wife, where she played Veronica Loy.

First role
Channing's acting career started with the experimental Theatre Company of Boston. The group staged the Elaine May play Adaptation/Next Off-Broadway in 1969, and she performed in it.
A role that slipped away
After taking small parts in feature films, Channing appeared alongside Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson in Mike Nichols' The Fortune (1975). The movie flopped at the box office and was not the breakthrough role she had hoped for.
