Plot summary
Eight months have passed since Danny, the Corbetts' four-year-old son, ran into the street after his dog and was struck by a car. Becca wants his belongings cleared away and the house sold; Howie grows angry at each reminder she removes and wants another child, which Becca refuses. Nat, Becca's mother, also lost a son, Arthur, to a drug overdose, and Becca insists the two losses are not alike. Becca's sister Izzy is pregnant, and Izzy bristles at Becca's remarks about motherhood. At the support group, Becca is irritated by other parents and stops attending; Howie keeps going without her. Becca begins meeting Jason, the teenager who was driving the car.
