Trailer

Plot summary

Lane lives on the Vermont acreage her mother gave her, recovering after a suicide attempt. Her friend Stephanie, married and living in Philadelphia, has stayed for most of the summer, both to keep Lane company and to get away from an unsatisfying marriage. Lane's mother Diane, once a well-known actress, is visiting with her husband Lloyd, a physicist and Lane's stepfather. Two neighbors are close to Lane: Howard, who teaches French and is in love with her, and Peter, a struggling writer she loves, whose attention has turned toward Stephanie. Lane plans to sell the property, pay her medical debts and move to the city to work as a photographer. Diane wants Peter to write her biography, a project that would put a painful part of Lane's past back in view.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Woody Allen shot September twice: it originally starred Sam Shepard as Peter, Maureen O'Sullivan as Diane and Charles Durning as Howard, and after editing he rewrote, recast and reshot the whole film. Christopher Walken had shot a few scenes as Peter but was judged not right for the role.
  • Lane's backstory, in which she as a teenager supposedly shot her mother's abusive lover, is reminiscent of the real-life events involving actress Lana Turner and her daughter Cheryl Crane.
