Plot summary
Al Percolo scouts for the New York Yankees, but the prospect he found, Tommy Lacy, freezes in his first game, and the team punishes Al by sending him to the Mexican countryside for a new find. His search is fruitless until he meets Steve Nebraska, a young American who throws a fastball over 100 MPH and never misses at bat. Steve agrees to join the Yankees, but general manager Ron Wilson fires Al when he calls to report the find, and Al brings Steve to the United States anyway. A Yankee Stadium audition in front of every Major League team sets off a bidding war, and the Yankees sign Steve for $55 million, though the team demands a psychiatric evaluation before he plays. Al picks the first name in the phone book, Doctor H. Aaron.

- Andrew Bergman said the original version of the story was a completely different film: the scout found a man in Mexico who was the second white man ever to receive injections, the first being Babe Ruth, and the character was a political fugitive on the run.
- Albert Brooks contributed to a rewrite of the script because it "was written very silly"; his version did not end like Rocky with a big ending, but he said the studio forced director Michael Ritchie to change the ending.
- Albert Brooks said in a July 1999 Film Comment interview that The Scout was originally intended for Rodney Dangerfield, and that the script was lying around, never going to get made, until he said he would like to do it.
- Andrew Bergman wrote his script for The Scout with Peter Falk in mind as the scout Al Percolo and Jim Belushi as the player Steve Nebraska.
